Manager Darren Ferguson has labeled his Peterborough United side as ‘a work in progress’ after their 1-1 draw with Lincoln City at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday. The draw earned Posh their first home point of the season, thanks to a brilliant second-half goal from Kwame Poku. Despite falling behind to Ben House’s first-half goal, Posh managed to level the score with Poku’s strike, but they struggled to find further scoring opportunities.
The result left Posh in 11th place in the League One table. Ferguson acknowledged that he needs to address his team’s difficulties at home, attributing their single point from three matches to a lack of clear-cut chances.
Ferguson expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s another disappointing result at home. We’re struggling to create enough chances, and it’s my responsibility to find a solution to this ongoing issue. We’ve been accustomed to creating far more opportunities. Today, the only real threat was Kwame, and he demonstrated that with a fantastic goal.”
“Credit to the players, as before this season we’ve often gone behind and not managed to get anything from a game, whereas today we at least secured a point,” Ferguson said.
“I’ve kept my feedback to the players positive. I pointed out that we managed to get something from the game against a team that shows why they don’t lose games away from home—they foul and slow things down, which they’re entitled to do.
“We started the game well, but we need to find a way to score that first goal. I need to address why we’re not creating many chances, and I might have to reconsider our formation.
“I didn’t want to change the shape at half-time as it would have negated all the work we had done. We knew what would hurt them, but we just needed to execute better. We conceded another avoidable goal. They sat back and tried to hit us on the counter-attack, but goalkeeper Jed Steer made some crucial saves.
“It was a game where the fans needed a lift, which is why I made the quadruple substitution. I don’t often do that. Some of the substitutes made a positive impact, while others didn’t have the effect I was hoping for.
“Kwame’s goal was exceptional, and that’s why I fought so hard to keep him. He brings a level of quality and threat that we need. We need others in the forward line to step up and match that threat. We know he’s a fantastic player at this level; it was a really good finish, and we need more of that from everyone. We need a sharper cutting edge and perhaps to take more risks.
“We just need to keep working with this group of players. We’re making progress, but we need to improve at home. When teams sit back, we need to figure out why we’re not creating more chances.”
Posh will look for their first home win of the season on Saturday, September 21, when they host Bristol Rovers, who were defeated 4-0 at home by Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
