Peterborough United reportedly had a ‘substantial six-figure’ bid for a non-league talent turned down on transfer deadline day. Midfielder Taelor O’Kane, 19, was linked with Peterborough (Posh) throughout the summer.
Despite making just 12 starts for National League side AFC Fylde, O’Kane has a strong reputation in non-league circles. Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony mentioned on his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast that the club made an offer for an unnamed non-league player, but it was rejected.
MacAnthony said, “We attempted to sign a gem, but his club wanted too much for someone who hasn’t been a regular in their team. But that’s their right.”
Fylde’s director of football, Alex Hughes, responded: “We’re pleased to see higher division clubs recognizing our successes. Taelor has undeniable potential, and we expect him to soon be a regular first-team player with a bright future.
He remains central to our plans, and the chairman’s decision to reject the bid was made without hesitation.”
O’Kane, the son of former Manchester United and Everton defender John O’Kane, has also attracted interest from Portsmouth, Luton Town, and Stockport County. He made a substitute appearance in Fylde’s 4-3 loss to Yeovil in a recent National League match.
Having been with Fylde since age five, O’Kane signed a new two-year contract in the summer, but he was reportedly open to a move to Peterborough, known for developing non-league players into top-level footballers.
Notable examples include Jack Taylor, who moved from National League Barnet to Peterborough in January 2020 and now plays for Premier League side Ipswich Town, as well as Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron Mclean, and George Boyd, who all played in the Premier League after joining Peterborough from non-league teams.
Winger Ephron Mason-Clark also moved to Championship side Coventry City for £4.25 million, two years after Peterborough signed him from Barnet. Peterborough may make another attempt to sign O’Kane in January, though they are likely to face stiff competition from other clubs.
