The OPP has arrested and charged a member of the Peterborough Police Service following an investigation that began earlier this year.
On September 7, 27-year-old Mackenzie Rogers of Peterborough was arrested and charged with two counts of breach of trust, contrary to section 122 of the Criminal Code, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1) of the Criminal Code. Rogers is a seven-year veteran of the police service.
On March 18, 2024, the Chief of the Peterborough Police Service requested the OPP to investigate allegations involving a member of the service. The investigation was carried out under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
Peterborough Police Chief Betts stated, “As Chief of Police, this is difficult and disappointing news to share with the community.
I also recognize that this is an extremely challenging day for everyone in our organization, and for the community to learn that someone in a position of trust has been arrested and charged criminally.
I want the public to know that these situations are taken seriously, and the officer has been suspended with pay in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act. As the case moves through the court process, that status may be re-evaluated.
I am fully aware that this officer has not been convicted of the alleged crimes, and I am committed to ensuring the wellbeing of all our members, with support programs in place as needed.”
Rogers was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on October 8, 2024.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
