Even the umpires are getting in on the action during Friday night’s fast-paced elimination final! Early in the first quarter of the Dogs-Hawks clash at the MCG, officiating umpire Nick Foot accidentally wandered into the running path of Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton, leading to a heavy collision between the two.
The contact was entirely incidental, as Naughton was focused solely on the ball as he raced toward a marking contest.
Foot seemed to notice Naughton at the last moment, but by then, the collision was unavoidable, leaving the umpire visibly dazed and second-best in the aftermath. Fortunately, after taking a moment to recover, Foot was able to continue officiating and signaled that he was fine to keep going.
Channel 7’s Brian Taylor commented on the incident, noting, “I think umpire Nick Foot has been hurt there; it looks like he may have taken a hit in the ribs or shoulder area. You can see the umpire going down there.”
At quarter time, the Western Bulldogs held an early lead, having outscored the Hawks by two goals.
