Peterborough United promotion hero Tommy Rowe has joined Manchester United in a player-coach role with the Under-21 side.
The 35-year-old, who scored the first goal in Posh’s 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in the 2011 League One play-off final at Old Trafford, secured the position after a successful trial this summer. Rowe will assist in coaching the Under-21s and provide on-field feedback to players, as reported by Manchester News.
Rowe, a former member of the United Academy before his release in 2003, moved to Peterborough from Stockport County in July 2009. He made 200 appearances and scored 27 goals before transferring to Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2014. He was released by Doncaster Rovers at the end of last season.
Meanwhile, former Posh striker Dwight Gayle is set to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian as a free agent following his departure from Derby County at the end of last season.
RELAATED: Peterborough United Boss On One Performance Against Gillingham
Peterborough United kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with a 2-1 win over Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday night, overcoming a determined effort from the hosts.
The defending Trophy champions made seven changes to their starting lineup from their recent League One match, fielding a blend of experience and youth. Gillingham also shuffled their squad, making nine changes as manager Mark Bonner aimed to provide playing time for returning injured players and those in need of match fitness.
In the second half, Gillingham continued to push for a goal, with Nevitt and Jack Nolan linking up effectively to create early opportunities. However, Peterborough’s defense stood firm, and Bilokapic made crucial saves to keep the hosts at bay.
Peterborough extended their lead in the 75th minute with a stunning 25-yard strike from Bradley Ihionvien, leaving Ashby-Hammond helpless as the ball soared into the net.
Gillingham had further chances to reduce the deficit, with Lapslie and Nolan both coming close. Their persistence finally paid off in stoppage time when Nevitt headed in from a Gbode cross, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Peterborough from securing the win.
After the match, Posh manager Darren Ferguson was thrilled with Ihionvien’s performance. The 20-year-old, who recently joined from Colchester United, could be in line for his first start for Peterborough.
“Bradley delivered everything we want from a number nine,” Ferguson said. “The goal was exceptional, and I’ve seen him score like that before, but his pressing, aggression, and positivity were also outstanding.
“It was a magnificent debut. He was exceptional and didn’t put a foot wrong. He’s given himself a real chance of playing against Lincoln.”
Ihionvien, an academy graduate from Colchester, had only previously played away from the Essex club during a loan spell at Maldon & Tiptree in 2020.
