Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet offered an explanation for captain Liam Farrell’s last-minute withdrawal in their victory over St Helens at Magic Weekend.
Although Farrell was initially named in Peet’s matchday squad, he experienced a problem during the warm-up and was replaced in the back row by Sam Walters.
Patrick Mago, who was initially named as the 18th man, was then promoted to the bench. The Warriors secured a 20-0 win against their rivals at Elland Road.
Peet explained, “He’s had a tight calf all week, but he thought he’d be fine, so I was surprised when the physio brought it up.”
Looking ahead, Peet added, “We’ll need to make a decision on how to handle it wisely.”
Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet shares praise for Sam Walters
In his post-match press conference, Peet lauded Sam Walters, who stepped in for Farrell in the back row, calling it the 23-year-old’s best performance in a Wigan jersey.
“I thought it was his best game for Wigan, so it’s interesting how things turn out,” Peet remarked about Walters.
“There are a few players who are progressing well, and I was really pleased for Sam.
“I spoke with him earlier this week and he was uncertain about making the 17-man squad. He’s very self-critical and expects a lot from himself.
“From the start of the game, his physicality on both sides of the ball was impressive. If he maintains that level, his talent will shine through.”
