SWINTON LIONS have confirmed the acquisition of Wales international forward Anthony Walker on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Championship competitors Widnes Vikings.
Previously with St Helens and Wakefield Trinity in the Super League, Walker joined Widnes from Bradford Bulls before the 2023 season, appearing in 35 matches.
Originally slated to join Swinton for the upcoming season, Walker’s move has been expedited with the Vikings’ approval.
Widnes coach Allan Coleman elaborated, stating: “Anthony approached me and informed me of an immediate two-season opportunity elsewhere, so I believed it was fair to facilitate his move.”
“It’s crucial for us as a club to show respect to our players, and in return, we earn their respect.”
Walker, who has represented Wales twelve times, expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m thrilled to join Swinton. I’m eager to contribute to the team for the remainder of this season and beyond, for the next two years.”
“I’ve played with several of the guys before, both at Wales and other clubs, and they’re a fantastic group who all share the same goals.”
“After talking with Killer (Swinton coach Alan Kilshaw) and having worked with him in the past, I’m excited about his vision for the club, and I want to be a part of it.”
Kilshaw, who previously coached Walker during a loan stint at Rochdale Hornets, commented: “Anthony is a highly skilled player at this level, having played in strong teams throughout his career.”
“He’s a valuable addition for us, expressing a keen interest in joining the Lions, and we’re thrilled to have secured his services.”
“He brings a lot of size and strength as a prop forward, which will greatly benefit us.”
Walker may debut for Swinton, who currently stand third-bottom in the Championship, in their upcoming match against Doncaster at Featherstone’s Millennium Stadium on Saturday.
However, he will not be eligible to play the following weekend when the Lions host Widnes, as per the agreement between the two clubs.
