Striker Matt Rush has opted to step up a level after turning down a contract renewal at Maidstone.
The 23-year-old was offered a new deal after making a significant impact at the Gallagher Stadium since arriving from Aveley in November. Rush netted 15 goals for the Stones, in addition to six for the Millers, and contributed further with his diligent work ethic as George Elokobi’s team advanced to the National League South play-off semi-finals.
His impressive performances garnered attention from other clubs, and the ex-Southend player has now signed for Sutton United in the National League.
Sutton United returns to non-league football this season after spending three years in League 2.
In a message directed at Sutton supporters, Rush stated, “I’m eager to get started, score some goals in front of you all, and help achieve promotion.”
Rush received coaching from former Newcastle and Manchester United striker Andy Cole during his time at Southend.
And he’ll be working with another ex-forward in Sutton manager Steve Morison, who made his name at Millwall and also played for Norwich and Leeds.
“I’m buzzing to get the deal with Rushy over the line,” Morison told the club website.
“He’s had a fantastic season at both Aveley and Maidstone, and since leaving Southend he’s really grown as a player, and I really think he can continue his form with us at the next level.
“The fans are going to love watching him, his work rate is second to none and he scores such good goals in the penalty box.”
Maidstone appear to have been anticipating Rush’s exit, signing forwards Aaron Blair, Shaq Coulthirst and Pierre Fonkeu this summer, while Matt Bentley has announced he is staying on.
