The former Wakefield, Hull FC, and Bradford head coach, has confessed he wants to return to rugby league, but only in one job.
John Kear, who had been a head coach for nearly three decades, hung up his clipboard midway through the season after losing his job at Widnes.
Since then, the 69-year-old has been content with punditry work for the BBC and spending more time relaxing.
Despite not wanting a permanent head coaching position, Kear misses the excitement of working in rugby league.
“I’m just doing a lot of commentary work and putting my feet up, which is very pleasing,” Kear told League Express.
“I’ve played a lot of golf and spent a lot of time with my grandchildren, but I’m getting bored lately, to be honest.
“I don’t want to return as a permanent head coach, but if an interim or director of rugby league position were available, that would be appealing.
“I’m not actively seeking it but if someone comes up with something interesting, I would certainly give it more than a penny’s thought.”
So, what about rugby league does Kear miss?
“Because of the commentary, I’ve been to a lot of games, and I still get a tingle on game day, so I guess that’s what I’m missing the most.
“I wouldn’t want to be a head coach since you have to plan and prepare for the season and other things; a support job would be more appealing to me.
“I’m not actively seeking it but if someone comes up with something interesting, I would certainly give it more than a penny’s thought.”
“I’ve done something similar previously; I was Wakefield’s director of rugby for a year alongside Chris Chester.
Despite the fact that I enjoyed working with Chris, I still wanted to coach. That yearning is no longer present in me.”
