AFL Trade News: Swans young gun close to completing new deal

Sydney Swans player, who received a 2024 Rising Star nomination earlier this season, is nearing a new contract agreement with the team.

Matthew Roberts, a talented 20-year-old from South Australia, has been a crucial part of the team’s lineup over the past few seasons.

His consistent performance and skill on the field are about to be recognized. This season, he has played in 12 out of 13 games, with a notable game in Round 1 where he made 19 disposals and eight marks against the Melbourne Demons.

Roberts, who has a 2025 contract with the Swans, will likely be the next player to receive a contract extension, joining the ranks of teammates Errol Gulden, Oliver Florent, Robbie Fox, and Will Hayward. reports that Roberts will receive a two-year contract extension from the Sydney Swans that will last until the end of the 2027 campaign.

“We’ve been in discussions for about a month now, and we’re just finalizing the details, which is excellent news for Matthew,” said the spokesperson.

Roberts was selected by the Sydney Swans in the 2021 AFL Draft, alongside Angus Sheldrick, Corey Warner, and Lachlan Rankin. He made his AFL debut in Round 11 of the following season, after impressing in the VFL.

After his debut, Matthew Roberts has accumulated 19 games under his belt as a medium defender and earned a Rising Star nomination in Round 1 against the Melbourne Demons.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Swans have 15 players, including notable names like Harry Cunningham, Jacob Konstanty, Sam Reid, and Logan McDonald, whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.
